Looking after a wool dread set is fairly simple. A few gentle care habits can help it stay neat and ready for its next installation.
This guide focuses on the set itself. For washing your scalp while the extensions are installed, see the separate washing guide.
Basic care
1. Remove pills gently
Small pills can appear on felted wool over time. Carefully remove them by hand or trim just the pill with small scissors, without cutting into the strand.
2. Wash by hand only
Hand-wash the set. Machine washing can alter the shape and texture of the dreads.
3. Squeeze out the water
After washing, gently work from the top of each piece to the bottom, squeezing with smooth movements. A little color may come out in the water with hand-dyed material.
4. Dry completely
Let the set air-dry, or use a hair dryer on a moderate setting appropriate for its materials. Make sure it is completely dry before storing it.
Sets with loose goat-hair ends
These need a little extra attention, especially at the ends.
1. Remove pills
Care for the felted sections as you would with an ordinary wool set, gently removing or trimming surface pills.
2. Hand-wash the set
Avoid machine washing.
3. Squeeze and reshape
Gently squeeze water from the felted sections, working down the length. Then scrunch the loose goat-hair ends to help define their curls. Some color in the water can occur with hand-dyed material.
4. Restore the shape
If a felted strand has developed a bend, gently roll it between your palms to help straighten it.
5. Detangle the loose ends
Apply a little conditioner or detangling product to the loose goat-hair ends. Comb them carefully, starting at the very tips and gradually working upward. Some initial shedding may occur.
This step is for the loose ends, not the felted sections or the scalp.
6. Dry
Air-dry the set or use a hair dryer with a setting suitable for its materials.
Gently detangle the loose ends when they begin to tangle. With regular care, your set can stay looking lovely through repeated wear ❤️
