What Are Wool Dreads?

I’ve been working with wool dreads for a long time, and people still tell me how surprised they are by their softness and light feel. They’re a way to explore an unusual hairstyle with a manageable care routine.
You can see examples of my work in the Raitubow Dreads collection.

What are they made from?

Wool dreads are extensions made from natural merino wool, a fine, soft fiber. The wool is worked and felted into a firm shape to create a neat, durable strand.
You don’t need to form permanent dreadlocks in your own hair. The extensions are usually braided in and later removed by undoing the braids.

Do they smell like wool?

This is one of the questions I hear most often. People sometimes expect a strong wool smell.
During making, the wool is treated and cleaned to reduce any noticeable odor. My finished sets are intended to have a neutral smell rather than a strong wool scent.

What do they feel like?

Worried that wool will feel prickly? Merino wool is chosen for its softness. I often compare the feel of the finished dreads to soft fleece or a plush toy.
Comfort is individual, so if you’re unsure about the material, ask me about it before choosing a set.

What colors are available?

Here’s the fun part: hand dyeing opens up a wide range of possibilities.
Think soft gradients, sharp color changes, pastels, or bold combinations. A set could fade from white to black, blend pink into purple, or bring together several colors. The starting point is your idea and the shades you love.
My portfolio includes sets with many different coloring techniques and levels of detail.

How much do they weigh, and how long can they be?

An average wool set is around 300 g, though individual sets vary. Compare the actual weight of the sets you’re considering, since the length, number of strands, and materials all make a difference.
Length is flexible, and very long sets can be made. Ask about the weight and measurements of the design you’re considering.

Will they feel hot?

It’s understandable to associate wool with warmth. Wool dread extensions have space between the strands, and customers also wear them in summer.
How warm they feel depends on the set, the hairstyle, the weather, and your own comfort. We can discuss the amount of hair and volume you want when choosing a set.

Do they get fuzzy? Is maintenance difficult?

Well-felted wool holds its shape and can remain neat through repeated wear. Some fuzz, pilling, or changes in shape may still appear over time.
Wool absorbs water and feels heavier when wet. Gently squeeze out excess water and allow the set to dry completely. Follow the care guidance for your specific set, especially if it includes loose ends, curls, or synthetic fibers.

Can you reuse them?

Yes — that’s one of their main advantages. After removal, care for the set and store it for another installation. You can use the same look again or combine it with new strands and colors.

Want a set of your own?

I make custom wool dread sets, choosing colors, gradients, length, and volume around your preferences.
