With careful handling, you can come back to your favorite set again and again.

Explore more sets and examples at Raitubow Dreads.

How long does one installation last?

Wool dread extensions are typically worn for around 3–4 weeks to 1½–2 months per installation. The timing varies with hair growth, daily wear, and scalp care.

Leaving a set in for longer than 6–8 weeks can allow tight tangles to form at the roots, making removal more difficult. My usual recommendation is to plan for about a month, or up to a month and a half, then take the set out and give your hair a break. The right timing should be discussed for your own hair and installation.

How many times can you reuse a set?

The set itself lasts much longer than one installation. With good care, a wool dread set can be installed repeatedly and worn on and off for a year or longer.

Some customers keep using the same set for several years, occasionally refreshing a few strands, adding a new color accent, or having the set maintained.

What affects how long a set lasts?

Felting quality. Well-felted dreads are less likely to become fuzzy, develop pills, or lose their shape.

Care. Gentle washing, complete drying, and careful removal help preserve the set. Store it somewhere dry, avoid compressing it tightly in a bag, and don’t leave damp pieces in a pile.

Your lifestyle. Sports, swimming, frequent travel, hoods, and scarves can all increase wear. Your set is still reusable, but it may need maintenance sooner.

In my experience, my sets often last two or three installations before needing maintenance, and some customers have worn theirs for a couple of years ✨

Explore the collection
</turbo:content>

Worried that wool dreads will feel heavy, be difficult to wash, or limit your style? A maker’s guide to five common concerns.

      <turbo:content>

5 Myths About Wool Dreads

Thinking about wool dread extensions, but still feeling unsure? Let’s talk through five common concerns and what to expect.

You can find more information and examples in the Raitubow Dreads collection.

1. “They’ll be too heavy.”

Wool dreads are made from merino wool, a soft, airy material. A full set often weighs around 300 g, although the weight depends on its length, number of pieces, and details.

Many people find them comfortable once they get used to the new hairstyle. If weight is a concern, we can discuss a shorter or smaller set rather than assuming the same set will suit everyone.

2. “I’ll have to turn my own hair into permanent dreadlocks.”

Wool dread extensions are a temporary hairstyle. They are usually braided into your own hair without glue, heat bonding, or chemical processing, and removed by undoing the braids.

You don’t need to turn your own hair into permanent locs. Careful installation, appropriate tension, and gentle removal still matter.

3. “I’ll get bored after a week.”

There’s plenty of room to change your look: try a different length, add strands, or play with color.

Want to go from natural brown to a smoky ombré? A different set can give you that change without dyeing your own hair. You can keep your earlier set and return to it whenever you like.

4. “My scalp will itch the whole time.”

The feeling of a new hairstyle varies from person to person. Some people need a short adjustment period after installation, but comfort isn’t something I can promise for everyone.

The aim is a careful installation without excessive tension, together with suitable scalp care. If you have concerns, bring them up when we discuss your set and appointment.

5. “I won’t be able to wash my hair.”

You can wash your scalp while wearing dread extensions. The technique is a little different: work gently along the sections, avoid pulling, rinse thoroughly, and allow the hair and extensions to dry completely.

There’s a separate step-by-step washing guide in the journal.

Still have questions, or want help deciding whether this style is for you? Message me. I’ll help you explore colors, length, and a design that works with your look 🤎

Explore the collection
</turbo:content>

Discover how merino wool dread extensions are made, how they feel, the colors and lengths available, and how a reusable set works.

      <turbo:content>

What Are Wool Dreads?

I’ve been working with wool dreads for a long time, and people still tell me how surprised they are by their softness and light feel. They’re a way to explore an unusual hairstyle with a manageable care routine.

You can see examples of my work in the Raitubow Dreads collection.

What are they made from?

Wool dreads are extensions made from natural merino wool, a fine, soft fiber. The wool is worked and felted into a firm shape to create a neat, durable strand.

You don’t need to form permanent dreadlocks in your own hair. The extensions are usually braided in and later removed by undoing the braids.

Do they smell like wool?

This is one of the questions I hear most often. People sometimes expect a strong wool smell.

During making, the wool is treated and cleaned to reduce any noticeable odor. My finished sets are intended to have a neutral smell rather than a strong wool scent.

What do they feel like?

Worried that wool will feel prickly? Merino wool is chosen for its softness. I often compare the feel of the finished dreads to soft fleece or a plush toy.

Comfort is individual, so if you’re unsure about the material, ask me about it before choosing a set.

What colors are available?

Here’s the fun part: hand dyeing opens up a wide range of possibilities.

Think soft gradients, sharp color changes, pastels, or bold combinations. A set could fade from white to black, blend pink into purple, or bring together several colors. The starting point is your idea and the shades you love.

My portfolio includes sets with many different coloring techniques and levels of detail.

How much do they weigh, and how long can they be?

An average wool set is around 300 g, though individual sets vary. Compare the actual weight of the sets you’re considering, since the length, number of strands, and materials all make a difference.

Length is flexible, and very long sets can be made. Ask about the weight and measurements of the design you’re considering.

Will they feel hot?

It’s understandable to associate wool with warmth. Wool dread extensions have space between the strands, and customers also wear them in summer.

How warm they feel depends on the set, the hairstyle, the weather, and your own comfort. We can discuss the amount of hair and volume you want when choosing a set.

Do they get fuzzy? Is maintenance difficult?

Well-felted wool holds its shape and can remain neat through repeated wear. Some fuzz, pilling, or changes in shape may still appear over time.

Wool absorbs water and feels heavier when wet. Gently squeeze out excess water and allow the set to dry completely. Follow the care guidance for your specific set, especially if it includes loose ends, curls, or synthetic fibers.

Can you reuse them?

Yes — that’s one of their main advantages. After removal, care for the set and store it for another installation. You can use the same look again or combine it with new strands and colors.

Want a set of your own?

I make custom wool dread sets, choosing colors, gradients, length, and volume around your preferences.

Browse the collection for ideas or message me with your questions. I’ll help you put together a look you’ll enjoy wearing.

Explore the collection
</turbo:content>

A practical guide to washing your scalp while wearing dread extensions, rinsing thoroughly, removing excess water, and drying your hair.

      <turbo:content>

How to Wash Your Hair with Dread Extensions

The routine doesn’t have to be complicated. It simply needs a little more care and enough time for the hair inside the braids to dry.

A few things to keep in mind

Focus on your scalp. The main aim is to clean the roots and remove oil, dust, and product buildup. Avoid vigorously rubbing or scrubbing the dread extensions themselves.

Work with shampoo foam. Mixing shampoo with a little water makes it easier to spread along the sections. In the routine described here, conditioner, masks, clarifying shampoo, and color-depositing shampoo are not applied to the installed set.

Support wet extensions. They absorb water and become heavier. One option is washing while reclining in a bath so that the weight is supported, rather than pulling on the scalp and neck.

Discuss the washing schedule for your installation. The timing should take your scalp and lifestyle into account, rather than following the same fixed interval for everyone.

Step 1. Get comfortable

Set aside enough time. If using a bath, prepare warm water and get into a comfortable position that supports the extensions. Music can make the routine feel more relaxed.

Step 2. Make a light foam

Mix shampoo with a little water. You can use a small bowl or a foaming bottle. A foam dispenser makes it easier to distribute the mixture between the dread extensions.

Step 3. Clean along the sections

Apply the foam to your scalp along the partings. Spread it gently with your fingertips and lightly massage the scalp. Avoid pulling on the braids or scrubbing the lengths.

Step 4. Rinse thoroughly

Use plenty of water to rinse the roots and partings. Make sure no shampoo is left behind.

Step 5. Remove excess water

Gently squeeze the extensions so water can drain out. Avoid harsh twisting or wringing, but remove as much excess water as you can.

Step 6. Use a large towel

Gently blot from the top down. For smooth dreads, move carefully along the length. For textured dreads, gently scrunching them in the towel can help absorb moisture while preserving the texture.

Wrap the hairstyle in the towel carefully, supporting its weight with your hand.

Step 7. Spread the extensions out

Lay the lengths over a towel, for example on a cushion or the back of a sofa, so air can circulate and they can dry more evenly.

Step 8. If needed, use a hair dryer

Use a moderate temperature and follow the guidance for your particular set. Sets that include synthetic curls or other fibers may need different care from plain wool dreads.

Step 9. Let the hair inside the braids dry fully

The extensions may feel dry before your own hair inside the braids is fully dry. Allow enough time for both.

Does wool take longer to dry than Kanekalon?

The answer depends partly on how much water is removed first. In my experience, a well-squeezed wool set can dry in a similar time to Kanekalon, but the set’s thickness and drying conditions make a difference.

With practice, washing becomes a familiar part of wearing your set. Then you can get back to enjoying your look ❤️

Explore the collection
</turbo:content>

A few gentle care habits can help it stay neat and ready for its next installation.

This guide focuses on the set itself. For washing your scalp while the extensions are installed, see the separate washing guide.

Basic care

1. Remove pills gently

Small pills can appear on felted wool over time. Carefully remove them by hand or trim just the pill with small scissors, without cutting into the strand.

2. Wash by hand only

Hand-wash the set. Machine washing can alter the shape and texture of the dreads.

3. Squeeze out the water

After washing, gently work from the top of each piece to the bottom, squeezing with smooth movements. A little color may come out in the water with hand-dyed material.

4. Dry completely

Let the set air-dry, or use a hair dryer on a moderate setting appropriate for its materials. Make sure it is completely dry before storing it.

Sets with loose goat-hair ends

These need a little extra attention, especially at the ends.

1. Remove pills

Care for the felted sections as you would with an ordinary wool set, gently removing or trimming surface pills.

2. Hand-wash the set

Avoid machine washing.

3. Squeeze and reshape

Gently squeeze water from the felted sections, working down the length. Then scrunch the loose goat-hair ends to help define their curls. Some color in the water can occur with hand-dyed material.

4. Restore the shape

If a felted strand has developed a bend, gently roll it between your palms to help straighten it.

5. Detangle the loose ends

Apply a little conditioner or detangling product to the loose goat-hair ends. Comb them carefully, starting at the very tips and gradually working upward. Some initial shedding may occur.

This step is for the loose ends, not the felted sections or the scalp.

6. Dry

Air-dry the set or use a hair dryer with a setting suitable for its materials.

Gently detangle the loose ends when they begin to tangle.
